This touching moment took place at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. The six-month-old baby koala was gently hugging his mommy during her life-saving surgery.
Mother Koala named Lizzy had been hit by a car on the highway. Her baby Phantom escaped without injury, but Lizzy wasn‘t that lucky. She suffered a collapsed lung and a severe facial injury. The two koalas were found and brought to the animal hospital.
Lizzy underwent an emergency surgery, and her tiny joey, who weighed only 1 pound, was hugging her during the entire operation!
Lizzy‘s lung has been repaired. Now she is still recovering at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. Her baby Phantom gives her all the love and support she needs.
It is fascinating that koalas are asocial animals. Special bonding can occur only between mothers and their offspring.
