Keith Urban, 50, and Nicole Kidman, 50, got married in June 2006 in a gorgeous wedding ceremony that took place in Sydney. In 2008, they welcomed their first daughter, Sunday Rose, followed by Faith Margaret, in 2011.
Nicole has an adopted son, Connor Anthony, and daughter, Isabella Jane, with her first husband, Tom Cruise. Their 10-year marriage ended in 2001 due to irreconcilable differences, according to Cruise. In 2006, giving an interview to Ladies’ Home Journal, Kidman said she still loved him,
He was huge; still is. To me, he was just Tom, but to everybody else, he is huge. But he was lovely to me and I loved him. I still love him.
Just a little later in her interview to Vanity Fair, Kidman revealed she had been secretly engaged to Australian country singer Keith Urban. 9 years later Kidman said,
We didn’t really know each other – we got to know each other during our marriage.
Speaking on Today show’s Richard Wilkins, Keith said that as the couple lived their lives out of the spotlight, moving between their two homes (one in Sydney, Australia, and another in Nashville, Tennessee, USA), they are rarely seen on tabloids’ rumours pages. He added,
I want to live our life together, and the fact we live somewhere where we’re not being photographed all the time — it makes it possible for people to make up that stuff because you’re not always there to defend it.
But their marriage has not always been cloudless. Just four months after their wedding, Urban had to go to rehab for alcohol addiction. It wasn’t the first time, as he had previously addressed a cocaine addiction, in 1998. Nicole, who was in Rome, promoting her film, immediately returned home after hearing the news. Keith spent 3 month in rehab. In 2016, he told Rolling Stone,
I caused the implosion of my fresh marriage. It survived, but it’s a miracle it did. I was spiritually awoken with her. I use the expression ‘I was born into her,’ and that’s how I feel. And for the first time in my life, I could shake off the shackles of addiction.
Kidman also spoke about difficulties in a marriage to UK magazine Red, saying that when people get older and are aware of their past mistakes, they usually want their second marriage to last.
There were some separation rumour in the tabloids last year, but Nicole and Keith have discarded them and are still strong, no matter what. Urban calls his wife an open book,
She’s really a great communicator. Because of her, if I open up, every day, I’m listening and growing and learning. If I’m a better man, it’s because of her.
The couple is committed to communicating multiple times a day, despite their busy schedules and successful careers. It is reported that they have established “no more than seven days apart” rule. Allegedly, this is why Keith flew all the way to London for Nicole’s opening of Photograph 51, in the middle of his USA tour. In an interview to People in 2015, Kidman described the situation,
I said, ‘It’s too much for you to have to fly all the way back, don’t worry,’ and he said, ‘I’m flying.’ He flew 10 hours to come and be with me for the night, and then he flew back and did a gig. That for me is love in action. That’s extraordinary. But I would do the same for him and that’s what we’ve committed to as a couple.
And these are not just words. When Nicole had to decide whether she was going to take part in a New York version of London’s Photograph 51, she put the decision to a family vote. And when her husband and kids voted against it, she just had to give up the idea,
Both my kids said ‘no’ and my husband said ‘I hope not’. I would have loved to have done that on Broadway, but I love my kids and my husband far more.
It is probably this kind of attitude in a relationship and setting the right priorities that makes this 11-year marriage work and keeps it strong, in spite of severe public scrutiny and busy careers. We just wish Nicole and Keith to keep up the good work and stay as loving as they are now!
